The old Melbourne Gaol courtyard is the site where the notorious bushranger 'Ned Kelly' was hung. On the day of his hanging he was led from one door, across the courtyard and through the door on the other side. I wonder what must have been going through his mind as he walked to his death? It is told his last words were "such is life", before he was executed.
I researched 'Last Words' on the internet and found hundreds of quotes. I also found an American prison web-site which gave a photo and the last words of prisoners that were executed. Through my research I discovered that most of the prisoners, upon meeting their end, were sorry and empathetic towards those they may have hurt.
For my project I wanted to show Ned Kelly's last walk across the courtyard to the door. I cut out black footsteps in card and wrote a last words quote from different people on each of them. People walking past began to read the footprints and walked slowly, following in Ned's steps.
